New Bleachers Line the OMS Gym

The original bleachers which have been in place for nearly 50 years in the Middle School building (previously the high school) were recently replaced.  Over the last few years, Ontario maintenance staff have repaired or replaced many of the components of the old wooden bleachers.  School officials deemed them to be a safety concern for both students and staff, which is why the north bleachers were rarely used during events.

During the 2009-10 school year, Ontario Schools applied for and were awarded a Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) Safety Grant.  The grant provides funding for up to 67%, or slightly more than $34,300 of the project’s cost of $51,500.  The balance of the project’s cost will come from the district’s Permanent Improvement (PI) fund.

The scope of the project involved removing both the north and south bleacher structures.  It was determined that the north side bleachers would be replaced with a new, motor-driven bleacher system.

The new bleachers will accommodate the entire middle school student body for assemblies and spectators who attend events held in the gym.  The south side will be used for the players, coaches and the scorer’s table.  This will help to reduce the congestion created when the teams and the spectators crossed paths on their way to the locker rooms and concessions, respectively.

In early June workers from Farnham Equipment Company removed the old boards and the metal structure from the original bleachers.  After the bleachers were removed, the floor was waxed and the walls were painted.

On August 23, work began on the new bleacher system.  The new bleachers will have individual composite seats of blue with a contrasting “OMS” design in yellow highlighting the entire bleacher section.  Perhaps the biggest improvement will be the automation of the bleachers.  Through a single control, the bleachers will be pulled open and pushed shut using a series of electric motors.

Without the PI funds and the BWC Safety Grant, the project would not have been possible.
