My name is Tod Petit. I am the school counselor at Stingel Primary School and Stingel Intermediate School. I work with students, parents, teachers, and others to ensure that students have a successful experience at school. WHAT DOES A SCHOOL COUNSELOR DO?

Talks with students individually or in groups
Helps students relate to others
Promotes positive attitudes among students
Gains understanding through observation in classrooms
Helps in identifying the needs of children
Helps people to make better use of community resources
Aids teachers and parents in helping children
Assists students with the growing up process
Coordinates efforts with other school specialists
Coordinates referrals to outside agencies
Develops and presents special guidance lessons

WHY WOULD A STUDENT SEE THE SCHOOL COUNSELOR?

Problems with making and keeping friends

Concern about behavior

Coping with changes in school or at home

Improving study skills and school achievement

Adjustment to loss through death or divorce

Develop confidence in daily activities

Improve decision-making skills

Assist students in developing a positive self-image

HOW CAN A PARENT SEE THE COUNSELOR?

Call and make an appointment

Call and discuss the situation by phone (419-529-7021 ext. 2999)

Send a note to your child’s teacher

Drop by and see if the counselor is available

HOW CAN A STUDENT SEE THE COUNSELOR?

By telling the teacher

By putting a self-referral note in the envelope in the intermediate office or in my mailbox in either school.

By parent or staff referral
