School Health Services Mission:

Akron Children’s Hospital School Health Services is dedicated to supporting the academic success of children and youth through health promotion, education and child advocacy. School Health Services nursing staff are an extension of Akron Children’s Hospital in the school community. We promote and advocate for student health and wellness in school. We help manage patient populations and individual student health needs in the school setting.

Prescription Medication

Any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) that needs to be given at school, please follow the steps below:

  • Obtain an appropriate Medication Administration form from the office or by emailing one of the nurses.
  • The parent must bring the medication to the school office. No medication should be transported by the student.
  • All medications must be in their original containers. No medication past its expiration date will be accepted.
  • We ask that no more than a 30-day supply or 30 pills be brought in at one time due to storage and counting of medications.
  • If there are any changes in medication or its administration, a new form must be completed and filed with the office.
  • Students are permitted to carry inhalers or epi-pens (epinephrine auto-injectors) if the proper “self-carry” forms are on file.
  • No other medications or drugs, including over-the-counter medicines, can be in the possession of students.
  • At the end of the school year, parents must pick up their child’s medication. Medications not picked up will be discarded.

Immunizations

If your child receives any updated immunizations, please send a copy to the school. The most common times to get immunizations are prior to entering Kindergarten, 7th grade, and 12th grade.

When to Stay Home Guidelines

Students should stay home from school for the following:

  • Fevers that are 100.0°F and above.
  • Vomiting.
  • Pink eye (students may return 24 hours after antibiotic eye drops are started).
  • Anytime your doctor advises your child to stay home.

Health Concerns

Please be sure to update Final Forms on the district website with any new or existing health concerns your child may have. If your child has diabetes, asthma, a bee sting allergy, severe food allergy or seizure disorder please complete the required “Action Plan” paperwork. This paperwork will help all school personnel prepare for your child’s health needs. If your child’s medical condition requires a specific accommodation in the school setting please contact the District Nurse.
